Zachary Cale is a NYC based songwriter/musician originally hailing from the small town of Enon, Louisiana. His music ranges from lyrically driven balladry over American Primitive inspired guitar playing to Cosmic Country music and cerebral Folk Rock.
For the past decade Cale has been releasing records under his own name via a number of labels including his own imprint All Hands Electric. His latest album Duskland was released in 2015 on No Quarter to critical acclaim.
On stage Cale performs both solo and with an full electric band. In concert his melodically complex guitar playing has been compared to Neil Young and Bert Jansch with nods to pre-war Piedmont and Ragtime players such as Blind Willie McTell and Mississippi John Hurt. In a full band setting Cale adopts a style and delivery closer to country-tinged rock songwriters such as Alex Chilton, Ray Davies, and Tom Petty
He has played hundreds of shows traversing both the US and EU sharing stages with Sharon Van Etten, Destroyer, Robyn Hitchcock, Crystal Stilts, Neko Case, Six Organs of Admittance, Deer Tick, Ryley Walker, Justin Townes Earle, Jessica Pratt, The Black Swans, War on Drugs, Steve Gunn, Villagers, Hiss Golden Messenger, Foxygen, Wooden Wand, Michael Chapman, William Tyler, Chris Forsyth, Angel Olsen, Dan Melchior, and many others.
Snake Oil was established in 2011 by Jason Labbe and began as a collective of over a dozen musicians, living all over the country, who used home recording technologies and file sharing to collaborate on three hard-to-categorize instrumental releases: a self-titled LP, a 7” EP, and a second LP titled The Train is White and the Moon is Strong. Over the next several years, a core line-up of musicians emerged and Snake Oil regularly took to the stage, sharing bills with bands as diverse as Mates of State and Acid Mothers Temple. After a short hiatus, Snake Oil has come back with a new line-up and have recently finished recording a third LP, Dying of Sunsets, which will be out later in 2018. Departing from their usual recording process, the new LP was tracked live to 2” tape at Brooklyn’s Seaside Lounge by Charles Burst and Jason Labbe. This record also marks a drastic stylistic change for the band: the new material features vocals by keyboardist Emily Lee and new guitarist Kelly L’Heureux. Their vocally-driven arrangements act as compliment and counterpoint to the fuzzy psychedelic instrumentals, continuing to draw on influences ranging from Sabbath to CAN.
